Video poker boasts numerous variations, each with subtle twists that can dramatically alter optimal play. Variation #5426 is a lesser-known but rewarding variant that combines elements of Jacks or Better with a unique bonus payout for specific four-of-a-kind hands. Unlike standard versions, this game offers increased payoffs for four 2s, 3s, and 4s, while also including a kicker bonus when these quads are accompanied by a specific fifth card. The key difference lies in the strategy adjustments: since the bonus for low quads is significantly higher than usual, players must prioritize holding low pairs and suited connectors differently. To maximize returns, you need to memorize how these payouts affect expected value calculations. For example, holding a low pair (2s, 3s, or 4s) becomes more valuable than chasing a high pair in many situations. Always consult the paytable first, as gaming platforms may tweak the bonus amounts.
In Variation #5426, standard video poker strategy needs refinement. The most critical change involves how you handle two-pair hands. Normally, you would hold both pairs, but here, if one pair is low (2s, 3s, or 4s), it can be more profitable to break the pair to chase a four-of-a-kind with a kicker. For instance, if you have 2-2-3-3-K, it might be better to hold only the 2s and discard the rest, especially if the kicker bonus applies to 2s with a 3 or 4. Similarly, three-card straight flush draws that include a low card (2-3-4) become more attractive than usual because they can lead to both a straight flush and a potential low quad. Always consider the expected value: a low pair with a kicker draw can have higher EV than a medium pair. Practice using strategy charts tailored for this variant to avoid costly mistakes.
The kicker mechanic in Variation #5426 can significantly boost your bankroll if exploited correctly. When you are dealt a low pair and a kicker card (like 2-2 plus a 3), always hold the pair and the kicker if the payout for a quad plus kicker is at least 400 coins. However, if the kicker is part of a straight or flush draw, you may need to weigh options. For example, holding 2-2-3-4-5 gives you both the quad potential and a straight draw; but generally, the pair plus kicker is superior due to the guaranteed bonus. Another advanced tactic is to avoid holding a single high card when a low pair is present—even if the high card is an Ace. The low pair's potential for a 400+ coin win outweighs the chance at a high pair. Finally, if you have no pairs but cards like 2-3-4-7-9, hold only the 2-3-4 as they can form a straight flush or lead to low quads with a kicker. This aggressive approach requires discipline but can yield higher long-term returns.
